Statement of Ethics

The CAP is an independent, non-partisan multimedia media channel that is dedicated to exploring every facet of China's engagement in Africa. Eric, Cobus and everyone affiliated with the CAP is committed to maintaining the highest editorial standards in accordance with the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Code of Ethics:

  1. Seek Truth and Report: Ethical journalism should be accurate and fair. Journalists should be honest and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.
  2. Minimize Harm: Ethical journalism treats sources, subjects, colleagues and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect.
  3. Act Independently: The highest and primary obligation of ethical journalism is to serve the public.
  4. Be Accountable and Transparent: Ethical journalism means taking responsibility for one’s work and explaining one’s decisions to the public.

Our Values

  • To be independent: we will never advocate on behalf of a country, culture or company.
  • To be fair: we will always strive to report and comment on China-Africa issues in a manner that is fair and impartial. This doesn't mean we will not critique or praise various stakeholders from time to time, only that we will do so in a balanced, considered manner.
  • To be transparent: we will always answer questions about our professional backgrounds, the CAP organization and CAP-related funding to reassure our audience that anyone affiliated with the CAP does not have any conflict of interests.
  • To be respectful: we will never use disparaging or disrespectful language towards anyone and we will expect the same from everyone who engages with our content. Any use of disrespectful language (swear words, racial stereotypes, etc...) will be automatically deleted from our social media channels and possibly blocked by either/both Cobus and Eric.
  • To be inclusive: we aim to serve as facilitators of a larger conversation on China-Africa relations that includes stakeholders from all professions, nationalities, cultures, languages and more. We aim to seek balance in this discussion and will never discriminate or favor one group over another.

Editorial Accuracy

We always strive to be accurate in our reporting and commentary on China-Africa relations. However, when errors are made or inaccurate information is re-posted, we will always strive to quickly and publicly issue a correction and take active steps to ensure that similar errors do not occur in the future.
